This list was controversial in Szondi's own time, and continues so today. One should not quickly discard this direction of thinking without looking at the cluster of strivings. inclinations and trends particular to each psychiatric condition.

These WERE ONES believed by Szondi to be gene related and that these clusters of strivings are a psychiatric condition only when existing in an exaggerated or excess quantity in an individual. These when viewed as drives, exist in a mixture in everyone.

The Szondi Test Study Group is currently exploring "Ego Development" from the baby blob to the super adult outcomes. This is open source and you need not be any kind of professional to sit in. This is of course based on the findings of Hungarian Psychiatrist. Leopold Szondi who argued that normal was but, a balanced mixture of eight key psychiatric conditions. The Ego (Self/Me/I) has different 'settings' as development happens. The Ego settings are revealed by Szondi's test method, for those over age 4, and by a theoretical reconstructions for younger ages. The link is here {HERE}

Another way of studing human nature is through projective tests.

most of us have looked at cloud formations and discovered images in them. This is also the 'projective' basis of the well known ink blot psychological test of Dr. Rorschach. In such projections we tell things about our selves we do not realize we are telling. One has to know the decoding language for what the images mean to go beyond what is viewed by a person. These images Rorschach called percepts, and he named the science of ink blot decoding, Percept Analysis.

With this as an intuitive starting point he constructed a standardized set of ink blots, to be shown to persons in an ordered sequence. So when he tested certain persons with known diagnostic conditions he could systematized various responses as being significant in their special case. He later reversed this procedure in order to be able to tell what personality conditions a person would likely be suffering from by use of his percept analysis method. This method was refined by Rorschach and later by other researchers from 1922 up to the present day. It is often called the 'Gold Standard' of psychological tests.

Their appeared a large number of other personality tests, using word association, image description, drawing and various story telling type tests in the years that followed. Of note are the; Thematic Apperception Test, Draw A Person Test. At the same time many cognitive, intelligence and special skills tests were also being developed.

The most controversial of the new tests was the 1937 introduction of a test ensemble of facial photographs of
persons with a determined psychiatric diagnostic label and with also a genealogical family history of the same condition.

This test introduced a new testing procedure, based on a person's like or dislike of the photos he was being shown at that moment the test was given. Since for many, the like and dislike shifted with mood and internal needs the test was given one a day or every other day for a recommended 10 times. These interval given samplings were called profiles. They by themselves being less data than what is needed for the making of a firm diagnosis.
In some cases the test results, which at first were hoped to offer results similar to Rorschach, often enough failed to provide a single psychiatric label, but instead it was often found to show a mixture of labels. For some psychologists demanding close matching as proof of validity this was the end of their acceptance. For others it was the starting point of a concept of an individual's personality and any associated psychiatric condition as being one of shifting dynamics, not an absolute fixed state.

It was not until 1948 that Susan Deri published her Introduction to the Szondi Test, that tactfully overrode much of the opinion of her former professor and stated the dynamic mode of interpretation for the psychological world. It was thus put on an acceptable psychological basis. By then it was mostly viewed as a pseudo-science.

Interpretation of the Eight Szondian Drive Factors
It is to be recalled that the Szondi Test was built from the photographic facial photographs of individuals in the late 1800's early 1900's (newest 1937) who came from a family line in which a particular psychiatric condition was as if a pedigree.

Thus each photo carries the assumption of representing a 'reagent quality' in respect to the pedigree of a particular psychiatric condition.
Each photo also had to pass an acceptance protocol. To be included in the ensemble university students,and others from a control group that demonstrated the like and dislike reaction and further to elicit from the free associations of the test subjects, specific content that reflected the cluster of features and inclinations associated with that particular psychiatric condition. Further, six different examples of each psychiatric condition had to be found and verifed and then tested in the ensemble itself. Over two thousand photos were considered. Accepted were 48, to be printed (low tech quality of the time) on 2 x 3" facial photos mounted on cardboard for use in testing of indivuels. Still the set used today.
In the end selected were:
W. Weygandt (a respected associate of the key psychiatry authoity of the day, Swiss, E. Bleuler) as Atlas of Psychiatry(1901)[In German} provided 30, of the set. Probably because each photo also had an adequate genelogical references, the belief that mental conditions had a singular appearance, that was also reflected in the photographs.
